SUMMER NIGHTS
From the movie "Grease"

[Boy]
Summer loving had me a blast

[Girl]
Summer loving happened so fast

[Boy]
I met a girl crazy for me

[Girl]
Met a boy cute as can be

[Both]
Summer days drifting away,
to uh-oh those summer nights

[Everyone]
Uh Well-a well-a well-a huh

[All Boys]
Tell me more, tell me more
Did you get very far?

[All Girls]
Tell me more, tell me more
Like does he have a car?

[Everyone]
Uh-huh uh-huh uh-huh uh-huh

[Boy]
She swam by me, she got a cramp

[Girl]
He ran by me, got my suit damp

[Boy]
I saved her life, she nearly drowned

[Girl]
He showed off, splashing around

[Both]
Summer sun, something's begun,
but uh-oh those summer nights

[Everyone]
Uh well-a well-a well-a huh

[All Girls]
Tell me more, tell me more
Was it love at first sight?

[All Boys]

Tell me more, tell me more
Did she put up a fight?

[Everyone]
Uh-huh-uh-huh-uh-huh-uh-huh

[Boy]
Took her bowling in the arcade

[Girl]
We went strolling, drank lemonade

[Boy]
We made out under the dock

[Girl]
We stayed out 'till ten o'clock

[Both]
Summer fling, don't mean a thing,
but uh-oh those summer nights

[Everyone]
Uh well-a well-a well-a huh

[All Boys]
Tell me more, tell me more
But you don't gotta brag

[All Girls]
Tell me more, tell me more
Cos he sounds like a drag

[Everyone]
shoo-bop bop, shoo-bop bop, shoo-bop bop,shoo-bop bop, shoo-bop bop, shoo-bop bop, shoo-bop bop, YEAH

[Girl]
He got friendly, holding my hand

[Boy]
While she got friendly down in the sand

[Girl]
He was sweet, just turned eighteen

[Boy]
Well she was good you know what I mean

[Everyone]
Woah!

[Everyone]
Summer heat, boy and girl meet,
but uh-oh those summer nights

[Everyone]
woo, woo, woo

[All Girls]
Tell me more, tell me more
How much dough did he spend?

[All Boys]
Tell me more, tell me more
Could she get me a friend?

[Girl]
It turned colder - that's where it ends

[Boy]
So I told her we'd still be friends

[Girl]
Then we made our true love vow

[Boy]
Wonder what she's doing now

[Both]
Summer dreams ripped at the seams,

bu-ut oh, those su-ummer nights....

[Everyone]

Tell me more, tell me more!

[END]

Grease, the movie version of the popular musical, is an idyllic portrayal of high school infatuation and 50's cool. Danny (John Travolta) and Sandy (Olivia Newton-John) share a summer romance, thinking it will end with the beginning of school.

But Sandy is transferred to Rydell High, where Danny is leader of the leather-jacketed T-Birds. His "too-cool" stature is in jeopardy when he discovers Sandy is a cheerleader, and attempts to avoid showing his real feelings. Both decide to make the other jealous, and with the help of the "Pink Ladies", headed by wise-cracking Rizzo (Stockard Channing), Sandy eventually succeeds in winning Danny back.

The 50's high school experience is relived through fast cars--the T-Birds challenge the Scorpions at Thunder Road; a dance contest--National Bandstand emcee Vince Fontaine (Edd Byrnes) brings a national competition to Rydell High; slumber parties--Sandy is insulted by Rizzo for being a "good girl"; and drive-in movies--Danny takes advantage of Sandy, and their problems begin again.

Danny's harrowing race at Thunder Road makes the two more devoted than ever, and on the last day of school, Danny proudly wears his hard-earned letterman's sweater while Sandy sports a new look also--a motorcycle jacket.

TIPS TO LEARN ENGLISH!

Speak without Fear

The biggest problem most people face in learning a new language is their own fear. They worry that they won’t say things correctly or that they will look stupid so they don’t talk at all. Don’t do this. The fastest way to learn anything is to do it – again and again until you get it right. Like anything, learning English requires practice. Don’t let a little fear stop you from getting what you want.

Use all of your Resources

Even if you study English at a language school it doesn’t mean you can’t learn outside of class. Using as many different sources, methods and tools as possible, will allow you to learn faster. There are many different ways you can improve your English, so don’t limit yourself to only one or two. The internet is a fantastic resource for virtually anything, but for the language learner it's perfect.

Surround Yourself with English

The absolute best way to learn English is to surround yourself with it. Take notes in English, put English books around your room, listen to English language radio broadcasts, watch English news, movies and television. Speak English with your friends whenever you can. The more English material that you have around you, the faster you will learn and the more likely it is that you will begin “thinking in English.” .

Listen to English Speakers as Much as Possible

There are some good English teachers that have had to learn English as a second language before they could teach it. However, there are several reasons why many of the best schools prefer to hire native English speakers. One of the reasons is that native speakers have a natural flow to their speech that students of English should try to imitate. The closer ESL / EFL students can get to this rhythm or flow, the more convincing and comfortable they will become.

Watch English Films and Television

This is not only a fun way to learn but it is also very effective. By watching English films (especially those with English subtitles) you can expand your vocabulary and hear the flow of speech from the actors. If you listen to the news you can also hear different accents.

Listen to English Music

Music can be a very effective method of learning English. In fact, it is often used as a way of improving comprehension. The best way to learn though, is to get the lyrics (words) to the songs you are listening to and try to read them as the artist sings. There are several good internet sites where one can find the words for most songs. This way you can practice your listening and reading at the same time. And if you like to sing, fine.

Study As Often As Possible!

Only by studying things like grammar and vocabulary and doing exercises, can you really improve your knowledge of any language.

Do Exercises and Take Tests

Many people think that exercises and tests aren't much fun. However, by completing exercises and taking tests you can really improve your English. One of the best reasons for doing lots of exercises and tests is that they give you a benchmark to compare your future results with. Often, it is by comparing your score on a test you took yesterday with one you took a month or six months ago that you realize just how much you have learned. If you never test yourself, you will never know how much you are progressing. Start now by doing some of the many exercises and tests on this site, and return in a few days to see what you've learned. Keep doing this and you really will make some progress with English.

Record Yourself

Nobody likes to hear their own voice on tape but like tests, it is good to compare your tapes from time to time. You may be so impressed with the progress you are making that you may not mind the sound of your voice as much.

Listen to English

By this, we mean, speak on the phone or listen to radio broadcasts, audiobooks or CDs in English. This is different than watching the television or films because you can’t see the person that is speaking to you. Many learners of English say that speaking on the phone is one of the most difficult things that they do and the only way to improve is to practice.

Finally

Have fun!

An English Corner Experience

By Tiffany Glover

Last night was the second meeting of English corner for our Beihai students. Our first English corner of the semester was last week and we had an incredible turnout! We had at least 50 students packed into the classroom and so, with that in mind, Matthew and I didn't know how many students to expect last night. The turnout last night was about the same, there were approx 50 students packed into the classroom. It's great that so many students wanted to participate but having so many people makes it difficult to ensure that everyone is speaking English and not just sitting mute or speaking Chinese.

Let me backtrack a bit and explain English corner. English corner is an extracurricular activity for the students. It's an hour a week where the students can come and speak English with us foreign teachers. We assign topics each week and post them in advance. Topics can include anything such as sports, entertainment, aspects of Chinese society and Western society and the list goes on. My favourite part about English corner is I learn a lot about Chinese culture. Once the students feel 'safe' with us and feel like they can talk, they open up and will talk about their lives and that is always very interesting to me.

Back to last night...it was fun. Matthew and I both do English corner, although he's the one who assigns the topics each week. We move around the classroom and try to engage as many students as we can by talking about the topics and of course we talk about what it's like in Western culture. Our students are always eager to ask us questions. One of my favourite parts is when the students take the initiative to come prepared with questions. One of my students from last semester came with the question "what does the phrase 'she makes coffee nervous' mean?" Last night I had a really good chuckle as the students, especially the girls, have taken a liking to Matthew. At one point I turned around and saw Matthew talking to a group of students-every head within two rows of him was turned and paying attention plus there was a small gathering of students standing next to him and all were hanging on every word he was saying. I started laughing when I saw this :)

After English corner I went straight to salsa class. There were only a few students last night and so I had the chance to really work on what we've been learning over the last week. I got rather frustrated a few times last night as no one at the club really speaks English, and of course my Chinese is incredibly limited. This isn't so bad when I'm being shown a dance step because there's only so much talking involved in that. What frustrates me is I want to be able to talk to the other students, to my teacher, and ask about their lives and their interests and I just can't. If nothing else, it's really motivating me to try and study Chinese. During one of our breaks last night, my teacher called me over to the bar and he and another student offered me a green drink called "Bohu", or as I saw on the bottle it was wine. I was really skeptical at first but if I've learned nothing else, when given a drink in this situation it's best to smile and accept. The 'wine' wasn't all that bad and I would swear there was no alcohol in it. After our initial "cheers", my teacher turned to me and said "gambe!". At this, I drained the glass because that's what you do. The expression on his face, and the others around me, was absolutely priceless!! I looked at them and said "you said gambe! that means 'bottoms up'" and so they, in turn, also had to drain their drink.
